Valerie Sonnenthal can take any media, whether it be polaroids, film, or paper and turn it into a work of art. I've framed her homemade postcards. They are that special. Valerie's dance drawings remind me of the way she speaks. Listening to Valerie, at first, I often don't understand what she's saying. It was the same way with her drawings. I didn't understand what was on the paper. As Valerie and I became friends, I learned to pay better attention to her words. Sometimes they were like a puzzle, several conversations happening at one time.  But if you pay attention, you realize the meaning and importance of her words.  It is the same with the drawings. You can't glance at them.  You must look hard and pay attention. It is only then you can see the genius.
